What causes peripheral arterial disease?

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is caused primarily by atherosclerosis, a process in which plaque builds up inside the arteries, reducing or blocking blood flow to the extremities.

Other factors that may contribute include diabetes, smoking, hypertension, high cholesterol levels and advanced age.

How is peripheral vascular disease diagnosed?

Peripheral vascular disease is diagnosed by a combination of clinical evaluation, noninvasive tests and imaging techniques.

Common tests include the ankle-brachial index, which compares blood pressure in the ankle to that in the arm, and Doppler ultrasound studies to visualize blood flow and detect blockages or narrowing in the arteries.

What is endovascular therapy?

It is a minimally invasive procedure by which circulation is reestablished through catheterization either arterial or venous, including angioplasty with stent, aspiration of venous and arterial thrombus by catheter, placement of stents for aneurysms, allowing us to reduce the risks associated with surgery and give the patient a faster recovery.

Am I at risk for arterial disease?

Patients at greatest risk are those with diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, a history of prolonged smoking, renal disease, high cholesterol and advanced age.

Discomfort in early stages such as pain when walking short distances and more on slopes, changes in coloration and coldness of the feet, failure of ulcers to heal or lesions that do not heal easily.
