Frequently Asked Questions

What are lower limb ulcers?

Lower limb ulcers are open wounds that develop on the skin as a result of inadequate blood circulation, mainly in the legs and feet.

These ulcers can be caused by venous insufficiency, where the valves in the veins do not function properly, or by peripheral artery disease, which reduces blood flow to the extremities.

What causes leg ulcers?

Leg ulcers are usually caused by blood circulation problems, such as chronic venous insufficiency or peripheral arterial disease.

Risk factors include diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and smoking. Lack of movement can also contribute to its development, especially in older people or those with reduced mobility.

Why do foot ulcers occur?

Foot ulcers are often due to a combination of poor circulation and diabetic neuropathy, where loss of sensation prevents a person from feeling the formation of wounds or irritations.

This is particularly common in individuals with poorly controlled diabetes.

What do varicose ulcers look like?

Varicose ulcers, which develop due to venous insufficiency, usually appear on the inside of the ankle and can be quite painful.

They are characterized by irregular borders, a red background, often covered with yellowish exudate, and may be surrounded by hardened and discolored skin.

What can you expect from this treatment?

At Vargas and Morelli Vascular Clinic, our approach to treating lower limb ulcers is comprehensive and personalized, depending on the underlying cause and severity of the ulcer. Our team of specialists uses the most advanced techniques to optimize circulation in the affected areas, thus promoting healing and preventing future complications.

Treatment may include ulcer debridement, which is the removal of dead tissue to promote healthy healing; compression therapies to improve venous return; and both arterial and venous minimally invasive treatment depending on the cause of the ulcer.

Our patients can expect a significant improvement in quality of life with reduced pain and improved range of motion. Ongoing education on risk factor management and proper foot and leg care are critical to successful treatment and will be an integral part of your experience at our clinic.
